Sunflower Winner!

We enjoyed looking at all our tall sunflowers in class. We looked at the emailed photos and the printed ones that had been sent in. It was easy to see Joshua was the winner with his 7 foot tall sunflower.

He was closely followed by Regan and Duncan though.

Well Done everyone for doing so well looking after your sunflowers!

Our Glorious FS2 Gardeners!

WOW What a fantastic bunch of gardeners we have in FS2!

In April we planted sunflower seeds in class. We then all took them home to see who could look after their sunflower and help it to grow tall. Well I am so glad to say that the FS2 children are much better gardeners than Mrs Cameron and Miss Kitchen. We didn't do so well! We forgot to water the sunflower seeds we planted. Although they grew at first, because they were so thirsty and didn't get watered, they died!

Have a look at the photo's below of the children's sunflowers. Can you see who has won the competition of growing the tallest sunflower?

Sports Day!

Last Friday was Sports Day at Fieldhead Carr. The rest of the school did lots of different sporting events, rotating around them. At half-time it all stopped for the best bit of the morning - the FS2 running races!

We had lots of fun. Have a look at our photos

EUREKA!

Last week FS2 had a class trip to Eureka in Halifax. It was a fantastic day! Miss Kitchen and Mrs Cameron were so proud of us; how we used the museum galleries, how we behaved in the museum, the example we set as children of Fieldhead Carr and how sensible we were at lunch time and during the coach journey.
Mrs Frisby, Miss Clarke, Mrs Sinker, Mrs Holmes, Mr Harrison and Mrs Garth (Mrs Cameron's mum) all came with us too. They also had a brilliant day and had so much fun with us.

We explored all the galleries in the museum;

A Snake in FS2!

Last Friday we were so lucky in FS2 as 'Steve' the snake came to visit us.

He is Lacey's mum's corn snake. Lacey and her Aunty Gemma told us lots of information about him.

We found out he eats dead mice. He sleeps in a plastic tank but he has a heat mat under his tank at night to keep him warm. He sheds his skin regularly.

We even saw what his dead skin looks like after he has shed it.

Giant African Land Snails in FS2!

This week we have been learning more about minibeasts during our Topic sessions. We looked closely at some minibeasts that aren't very mini!

We borrowed Miss Morris's Giant African Land Snails from Year 2; 'Fizz' and 'Wurly'. We looked closely at them, talked about them and painted pictures of them, mixing our own powder paint colours. We needed to mix many different shades of brown!

Some children wanted to hold the snails to see what they feel like. They felt very wet and slimey! Some children didn't want to hold them themselves but they enjoyed watching the other children hold them. Elizabeth didn't want to hold them at all but after watching all the other children, she felt brave enough to hold them herself.

FS2 Jungle Art - is finished!

On Friday we painted the final parts of our collaborative Jungle Art based on the work of Henri Rousseau.

We hope you like it, as much as we do!

Symmetry

This week in Maths we have been creating symmetry!

We learned what a symmetrical pattern looked like in real-life, by looking at a butterfly's wings.

We then created our own symmetry.

We made;
symmetrical minibeasts in the dough, and in the maths area using counters.
symmetrical patterns on a large scale outside using large plastic bricks.
symmetrical patterns using duplo in the construction area.
and we used shapes to make a butterfly symmetrical on both of its wings.

Jungle Artists - 2!

This week we have had time to work on our large piece of art. We looked again at Henri Rousseau's Jungle Paintings. We chose our favourite parts and used some photographs of real jungle flowers as inspiration too.

Have a look at how we got on, on Thursday.

Come back to see the final work by the children as they finish the painting!

A Challenge or 2 or 3!

As we love a challenge in FS2 we have challenge tables for us to use independently when we have finished our 'challenge splats' which are our learning objectives for the different area's of the classroom.

Elizabeth followed her challenge splat to make a jungle animal in the DT area - Here is her fantastic giraffe!

Sienna used the challenge table and wrote labels for the names of the minibeasts.

Lacey sorted all the household objects matching them with the appropriate mathematical 3D shape on this challenge table.
Can you name all the 3D shapes on the table?

Our Obstacle Course in Maths

Last week in FS2 our Maths lessons involved a lot of physical work too! We completed an obstacle course. Whilst we were tackling each obstacle we were thinking and talking about how we were completing it, using lots of positional language.
We had to walk along the benches, jumping down at the end. We had to throw a beanbag into a bucket and then walk whilst balancing on stilts. We then had to move the ball using only our feet to make it go in-between and around the cones. We jumped over a bamboo cane, moved our body through the hula-hoop, went in and out of the posts before we finished the course - moving across the tyres.

We thoroughly enjoyed testing our physical skills and our mathematical positional language. Throughout the week we all became much more confident and skilled at tackling the obstacles.

Our Sponsored Fun Run!

On Friday FS2 had their annual sponsored event. We had to run around an area of the school field as many times as we could. Mrs Cameron made us a card to get stamped every time we ran a lap. She put us 9 spaces on the card to get stamped but some of us ran so many laps we had to go onto the back of the card to collect extra stamps!!
We were brilliant and even kept running despite the rain. So many grown-ups came to watch us too. Mrs Cameron, Mrs Frisby and Miss Clarke were very proud of our efforts as were our grown-ups that watched us. The year 6 children who came to support us and help us run enjoyed the fun run too.

Classopoly Treat

Last week we had a treat we were owed from a previous classopoly assembly. Our treat was to have 'Garden Time with Miss Morris'.
Miss Morris came to collect us and took us into the school garden.
She read us a story 'Mad about Minibeasts'.
We had a great time and loved our treat.

What have we been doing today?

This morning a group of children worked together in the construction. They decided to build a 'fire car'.  Duncan set to work on the design. The group then worked together to build it, matching the design. I asked them what the special features of the 'fire car' are. They said 'The fire car can speed very fast to rescue people!'

Here are the photo's of the plan and their construction of the fire car.

Jungle artists!

FS2 have started a new project today!

We looked at some of the paintings of the artist Henri Rousseau. He painted a lot of pictures based on the jungle and jungle animals. We really enjoyed looking at his work and saying what we liked and didn't like about his work.

Jake C and Joshua loved this painting of 'Apes in the Orange Grove'

Cieran said that Rousseau should have had more animals in his paintings to give them more character!

We then began to create our own work of art based using Rousseau's work as inspiration. We are creating one giant painting and we are all working on it.

We started it today. Here are the photo's.

Beat for a Treat - PJ Party!

Today we had our Beat for a Treat reward.

We well and truly beat our attendance target of 94%! Well Done FS2!

FS2 were so motivated to achieve their reward, they really deserved it.

First of all, we all changed into our pyjama's - including Mrs Cameron! Mrs Frisby organised our chocolate and strawberry milkshake for us. We then got cosy with our teddy's to watch 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' whilst eating our biscuits and swiss roll and enjoying our milkshake.

Our New Jungle Explorer Role-Play

FS2 have come back to school after half-term to find the role-play area has changed into a jungle and they are the explorers! They have loved hunting for minibeasts in there and they became excellent explorers. They have particularly enjoyed reading the new non-fiction books and learning  about animals from them.

Have a look at our photo's of the children enjoying the new area.

Phonics this week

This week in phonics we have been revising the 'ng' sound - in 'ring' or 'jungle'

We have also revised the 'sh' sound - in 'shop' or 'fish'

The children really enjoyed these Mr Thorne phonics video's. We even found out the sounds were in words that we had not realised they were in, such as 'kangaroo' and 'penguin'.

The video's are linked here, to enjoy again.

I've also put on links to 'Geraldine the giraffe's' videos on the sounds because FS2 found these very funny.

FS2 photography

In FS2 last week we went around school with Mrs Frisby looking for plants that are growing. We then used a digital camera to take photographs of the plants we found. We had to make sure we held the camera steady, looked at the viewing screen and pressed the button all at the same time! We then checked we liked the photograph we had taken by looking at the viewing screen again.

When we got back to class we wrote a sentence to describe what the flowers were like, that we had taken a photograph of.

Have a look at the slideshow to see red group's photographs and photographs of them taking a photo! You can also have a look at some of their super sentences.

Attendance!

This week every member of FS2 has come to school everyday!

We have had 100% attendance this week!

Miss Kitchen and Mrs Cameron are so pleased with us, for trying hard to come to school everyday. In Classopoly assembly this week Mrs Warner even gave us a special mention. It means next week we will get a role of the dice during Classopoly assembly.

We are on track for our 'Beat for a Treat' reward. So please try hard next week to come to school everyday to make sure we get it. We need to ask Mrs Warner or Miss Stevens when the treats will be happening.

BIG TALK NEWS

Mrs Cameron is trying something a little different for Big Talk on a Friday. Instead of setting homework for discussion at home on a specific topic, Mrs Cameron is using an interactive game on the interactive white board to generate discussion.
The children are given a starting sentence and then work in pairs to improve it to a superb sentence. This may involve adding WOW words (adjectives) or connectives to extend the sentence.
The children did this last Friday and really enjoyed it whilst being very engaged. We will continue this for the next few weeks, so don't be surprised if they are not coming home with 'Big Talk' homework. We will still be working hard on Big Talk in class on a Friday.
ANY discussion you have with your child about any subject will support them with class discussions and help develop their speaking and listening skills.

Thanks for your support
Mrs Cameron & Miss Kitchen

Cutting out carefully!

Joshua used the fine motor skills challenge table to practice his scissor skills. He cut out his favourite pictures very carefully, taking care not to cut into the picture. He then extended his learning by taking them to the DT area and making them into puppets. His idea was so good, lots of other children chose to do it too!

What can we do with a box of fabric?

Our construction area has had a basket of fabric added to it this week. Mrs Cameron wanted to know how we would use it to extend our learning and play in the construction area. We have used it to create an array of different things. It has been used to make garages, car parks, princess castles, houses, and today it became 'the giant's castle!'

As they were building it, Green group had a problem; the material kept slipping off from the top of the blocks. Millie and Zoe worked together to devise a solution to the  problem. They used small blocks wedged in the gap of the big blocks, to hold the material down. Well done girls!

Thursday 9 May 2013

We love a challenge!

In FS2 we have several challenge tables. The children enjoy using these when they have completed their learning target in the area's of provision. The challenge tables change regularly to keep the children enthused and extend their learning. They can be literacy, Maths, phonic or science based or might be focused on  helping them practice their fine motor skills.

Here Harry is writing a sentence about what he has done in the areas of the classroom, this morning. He is using our new chalkboard table!

On the Maths challenge table the children can make their own subtraction number sentences using some people and a bus. They put some people on the bus, count them, take some away and count how many they have left. They then record their number sentence on either a whiteboard or a post-it note. They enjoyed using this activity last week with an adult, so this week they are challenged to use it independently.

Here the challenge is to write a label for our garden centre objects.

Fab Fry-day!

Don't forget it's Fab Fry-day on Friday the 24th May!

Order your wonderful home-made breakfast by next Monday, 13/05/13!

It will then be served up by Miss Stevens and her amazing assistants on the 24th in two sittings; 8.10am or 8.30am.

It is always a lovely start to the day for the children, eating a special breakfast with their family and some of the staff. We hope you can all make it.

Everything's Growing in FS2!

Our theme this term is growth.

We have been learning about plants and what they need to grow.

Two weeks ago we planted sunflower seeds. Look at how well they've grown!

When everyone takes them home to plant them into larger pots we could have a competition. Everyone can take a photo of their sunflower in July and we can announce the winner of the tallest sunflower.

We also planted cress seeds but we decided to have an experiment. We planted some seeds and put them on the windowsill. We planted some more seeds and put them in a dark cupboard. We wanted to see how they might grow differently. This is the result. Why do you think one is white and yellow?

This week we have planted broad bean seeds. We wanted to see what the roots will look like when they grow so have put them in a glass jar rather than a pot of soil. I wonder if they will grow into a big enough plant to produce beans!

It's Time for Rhyme in FS2

In FS2 this week we are thinking about rhyme and rhyming words.

We enjoyed 'Green Eggs and Ham' by Dr Seuss today. After we had finished the story we changed the words at the end of a line, to make our own rhymes.

Tomorrow we will be discovering the rhymes in Hairy Maclary.

On Friday for Big Talk, we will look at the poem, 'Twinkle twinkle chocolate bar.'

This is the poem;

Twinkle twinkle chocolate bar
My dad drives a rusty car
Pull the starter,
Push the choke,
Off we go in a cloud of smoke
Twinkle twinkle chocolate bar
My dad drives a rusty car

Please comment and let me know which of the rhymes you've enjoyed the most this week and why.

I wonder if our quadblogging buddies have enjoyed any of these books. Please let us know if you have.

What have we been learning in FS2 today

We've had such a busy day in FS2 today!
Miss Kitchen asked some of the children at the end of the day about their learning and what they have enjoyed at school today.

Here is what they said;

Harley: I've enjoyed doing er... fishes. You had to put them on the water and then you stuck them outside the water and then you have to catch them and find out how many there are left.

Elizabeth: I have played with Holly and Meika and have been jumping down, rolling and running down the grass. I have been doing the fishes with Miss Morris. We were putting them in the water and counting out how many were left, onto the board.

Jayden: I have been doing the basketballing. I have been doing some painting, painting numbers and I was painting number eights. I painted two sevens!

Duncan: I have been throwing the ball in the net. I went in the dough and made some thing, I made a cake.

Jake T: I have playing in the car wash. I have been cleaning the scooters. We were spraying them to get them nice and clean and sparkly.

As you can see, the children have enjoyed learning in the outdoor classroom today and have been doing lots of Maths work. Check back later in the week to see what we are learning in Literacy and Topic this week.

Beat for a Treat!

As you may know all the school is working to 'Beat for a Treat'. We are all trying hard to come to school everyday to beat our previous average attendance score so we receive our treat as a reward.

Each class has chosen their own treat. In FS2 we decided on;
Bringing our teddies to a pyjama party and having milkshake and biscuits!

Only we can make it happen!

So remember to keep attending school everyday and we will -
BEAT FOR A TREAT

Our tadpoles have grown!

Just before the Easter holidays the tadpoles in FS2 grew back legs. This morning we noticed they have grown even more, and they now have front legs. They look much more like a frog now, too.

Can you see two of them sat on the log?

Can you remember what they are called when they look like a frog but have a tail?

Lenny's Day Out

Today Lenny visited the Leeds City Museum

He had a great time looking at all the different exhibitions in the museum. There was the ancient worlds gallery, where you can learn about Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. The Leeds Gallery had lots of interesting objects in it, there is a display of different wedding dresses in there at the moment. Lenny's favourite gallery was 'Life on Earth'. Here he saw lots of interesting animals and insects.

Here is a photo of Lenny in front of the bears.

Have you been to the Leeds City Museum before?

Last week in Maths we were learning about money, especially the coins we use to buy things.

We looked closely at the different coins and talked about them. We then did lots of activities in class about coins and money. These activities helped us remember the different value of the coins and understand how using different coins can make the same amount.

Our main activity was to play shops. We had to think carefully to decide which coins we would need to buy things in our shop.

We have a new member of FS2!

A couple of weeks ago new member joined our class. He is Lenny the Lion and he has come all the way from Kenya.

We knew he was coming when we received a letter from him. It explained that he was coming to England and wanted to come and stay with us when he arrived. That week we thought about how we could welcome him, and what he would need to know about our class. We wrote some brilliant letters to him, explaining how we would help him settle in when he arrived.

Now he's been here a couple of weeks, he has got to know a lot of us really well. He goes home with someone different from FS2 each night. We get to know all about what he gets up to because we write all about it in his diary. He has had some brilliant adventures.

Please leave a comment below and tell us what Lenny did when he came to stay at your house.

Comic Relief 2013

Friday 15th March was Red Nose Day.

Lots of us bought The new Comic Relief Red Noses earlier in the week. On Friday we wore them to school along with our red clothes and donated a £1 to Comic Relief.
